Three shootings occurred in Atlanta and DeKalb County early Thursday morning, seemingly at random.
Police believe the random shootings, one of which killed a man in front of his family, are related.
Atlanta Police announced Thursday evening that they had recovered a silver SUV believed to be involved two of the crimes. They later announced the arrest of Mikeal Callaway and he is accused of being involved in the DeKalb County murder. At this time, the suspect is in the DeKalb County jail. According to police, he had three active warrants in three different jurisdictions.
In Atlanta he is facing charges of Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, Burglary Smash and Grab, Criminal Damage to Property, Theft by Taking and Burglary in the First Degree. He faces a charge of murder in DeKalb County.
“At around 4:30 p.m. [Thursday], Atlanta Police officers located the silver SUV (now painted black) we believe to be linked to the two overnight shootings in the City of Atlanta,” the Police Department said. “We requested assistance from the Georgia State Patrol in conducting a traffic stop on the SUV. The Georgia State Patrol stopped the vehicle on Moreland Avenue near Custer Avenue in Southeast Atlanta and took the driver into custody.
“Atlanta Police Investigators impounded the vehicle and recovered a handgun from inside. We are holding the vehicle and handgun for processing. We have linked the vehicle to a residence on Wee Kirk Road in DeKalb County. Atlanta Police Investigators served a search warrant at the home for an additional crime we believe the vehicle to be linked to. Investigators have information linking the vehicle to a burglary which occurred on 2-20-2018 at 370 Auburn Ave.”
During a press conference, Atlanta Police stated they believe Callaway was connected to the murder in DeKalb. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, three shots were fired at the man’s vehicle around 4 a.m. Thursday morning, killing him. His family was in the car at the time. The incident occurred at the Brighton Village subdivision on Flat Shoals road, the AJC reported.
Earlier Thursday morning, a silver SUV was involved in two shootings that occurred in Atlanta.
Police said the first one happened shortly after midnight on I-20 west bound east of Holmes Drive.
“Upon arrival, units located a male victim who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds,” the police report says. “The victim stated that as he was traveling westbound on I-20, a silver SUV pulled up alongside his vehicle and an unknown suspect fired multiple rounds into his vehicle, ultimately striking him. The suspect then fled the scene. The victim was transported to Grady Hospital in stable condition.”
A little over two hours later, something similar happened at 455 Fulton Street SW.
“Upon arrival, at the scene, the officers located a male victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to his neck,” the police report says. “The victim stated that as he drove his vehicle westbound on Fulton Street, a silver SUV pulled alongside his vehicle and an unknown suspect fired multiple rounds towards his vehicle, ultimately striking him. After being struck, the victim lost control of his vehicle which collided with parked cars and came to rest on its side. The victim was transported to Grady Hospital in stable condition.”
Maj. Rick Mason told reporters that the shootings were random acts.
“Just a simple random acts of violence,” Mason said.
A reporter asked if the crimes were possibly gang related.
“The victims were simply victims,” he said.
