Earlier today Atlanta Police Major Fraud investigators recovered an ATM skimming device downtown. These devices read and collect the personal information of people swiping their debt cards and can be used to steal money from people’s accounts.
The device was recovered from an ATM inside a store near the Mariott Marquis in Northwest Atlanta. According to the police report, a customer who as trying to use the machine noticed the cover to the card reader cover seemed loose. He examined it, and realized it was a skimmer.
The card skimmer was given to the store’s cashier who then called police, according to the police report. investigators responded to the scene and took the device, which had a number 4 written on it, suggesting there may be other skimmers in use in the city.
Investigators are encouraging everyone to examine any reader slots before inserting their cards, and to alert the business owner and police if you notice anything suspicious. Also, they’re reminding everyone it’s important to keep an eye on your accounts for any suspicious activity.
