Contractors will close Irwin Street at the intersection of the Eastside Trail to make way for an extension of the trail, Atlanta BeltLine Inc. has announced.
The closure begins Monday, March 20 through Monday, April 17, ABI said in a press release. The section of road will be closed 24 hours a day during this time.
The section of the road is between Sampson Street/Auburn Avenue and Krog Street in the Old Fourth Ward/Inman Park area. ABI is establishing detour routes for pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
According to ABI, the alternate routes are:
– To cross the Eastside Trail at Irwin: If traveling east, turn right at Auburn Avenue, left at Randolph Street, left at Edgewood Avenue, and left at Krog Street. If traveling west, turn left at Krog Street, right at Edgewood Avenue, and right at Auburn Avenue.
– To access the Eastside Trail: The Eastside Trail can be accessed from the west side by way of John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, Highland Avenue, and East Avenue (via Alaska Avenue). Note that only the East Avenue access point is ADA-accessible. The Eastside Trail can be accessed from the east side by way of Elizabeth Street. Use Irwin Street/Lake Avenue, making a left on Elizabeth.
The Eastside Trail extension will lengthen the trail from Irwin Street to Kirkwood Avenue. Contractors will build a speed table at the trail crossing, sidewalks, curbs and gutters. They will also install light poles, rapid flashing beacons for pedestrian crossing and a fiber optic duct bank, ABI said in a press release.
There will be a public meeting on this project on March 2 at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 25 Boulevard NE, Atlanta, GA 30312. People with questions about the closure are encouraged to attend.
