Protesters in Piedmont Park on Sunday defaced the Gate City Guard statue near the 14th Street entrance, WABE reported.
The protest was one of several events in response to a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va that resulted in the deaths of three people.
According to WABE, “In addition to spray painting the statue, which depicts a soldier laying down his weapon at the feet of an angel, two protesters wrapped a metal chain around an olive branch held by the angel and broke it off.”
The monument was built in 1911 “to commemorate the efforts made over a thirty year period to bring about unity between the North and the South.,” according to Exploregeorgia.org.
