Stacey Abrams will be delivering the official Democratic response to next week’s State of the Union Address.
“At a moment when our nation needs to hear from leaders who can unite for a common purpose, I am honored to be delivering the Democratic State of the Union response,” Abrams tweeted this afternoon.
Abrams garnered national attention during the contentious fight against now-Gov. Brian Kemp. Despite her loss, she solidified herself as a rising voice in the Democratic party.
Shortly after the election, Abrams suggested she might be vying for Sen. David Perdue’s seat when he’s up for reelection in two years, or might take another run at Kemp in four. In the past, the response to the State of the union address has been viewed as a platform for up-and-coming politicians, WSB-TV reports.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said during a press conference this afternoon he’d discussed the response with Abrams, and he was excited that she’s agreed. The news was first reported by MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.
“Three weeks ago, I called Stacey Abrams and asked her to deliver the response to the State of the Union,” Schumer said. “I was very delighted when she agreed.”
Schumer lauded Abrams for her ability as a spokesperson, her leadership and her understanding of the struggles of working class individuals.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union address on Feb. 5. Abram’s response will follow.
