Atlanta City Council transfers Streetcar to MARTA

Atlanta’s much maligned Streetcar has a new owner.
On Monday, the City Council approved an ordinance to transfer all assets and operations to MARTA. The transfer will occur over the next year.
“Future lines are planned, and project developers intend to expand service to additional neighborhoods and other popular destinations around the city,” the city said in a press release.
The multi-million dollar project has been criticized for attracting few riders and its high costs. It’s also been scrutinized by the Federal Transit Administration about the streetcar’s safety.
