Atlanta Police Officer on leave after running over man on scooter

An Atlanta Police Officer is on leave and under investigation after running over a man riding on his scooter.
The incident happened on Aug. 8 at 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Place and Newcastle Street.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
“The crash involved an Atlanta Police Department patrol vehicle and a motorist riding a scooter,” a spokesperson for the State Patrol said. “The scooter rider was pronounced deceased at Grady Memorial Hospital. The officer, Ryan Chandler, age 24, was uninjured, but was also transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. The preliminary investigation shows Officer Chandler disregarded a stop sign and was not using emergency equipment.”
The victim was identified as Marvin King, 59 of Atlanta. He was not wearing a helmet. He was riding a motorized 49cc Moped.
An Atlanta Police Department spokesperson said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident. We are deeply sorry for their loss.”
