Atlanta Police: Scam uses spoofed APD number to steal personal info

If you get a call from an Atlanta Police Department number inquiring about a tax matter, you could be the target of scammers, APD says.
“It has come to the Atlanta Police Department’s attention that the phone number for our Zone 1 Precinct appears to have been spoofed and may be being used for scamming purposes,” a spokesperson for APD said. “We have been notified that someone posing as an Atlanta Police officer is calling from 404-799-2488 and saying they are calling on behalf of the IRS regarding a tax matter.
“Bogus calls about IRS debt are common scams and we believe this is an attempt to gain personal information from the recipient of the call. Further, the APD will not ask for your Social Security number over the phone. If you doubt the authenticity of a call from Atlanta Police, please ask for the individual’s full name and title and then ask to speak with a supervisor. Contact the Department if you still have doubts about whom you are speaking to.”
