Dad’s Garage offering summer improv camp for kids and teens

The new digs for Dad’s Garage Theatre Company in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood are providing the improv comedy troupe with a new opportunity: summer camps.
Dad’s Garage Kids Summer Camp (Ages 8-13) and Dad’s Garage Teen Summer Camp (Ages 13-17) will be week-long camps held in June and July. Each week’s camp will culminate with a show for friends and family. The camp hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Students will work throughout the week on a variety of theatre and improv skills,” a press release from Dad’s Garage says. “Not only will campers learn to play some top-notch improv games, but we’ll encourage positive self-image, healthy communication habits, and scene work tools.”

Improv has been used around the world as a way to teach young people the skills necessary for collaboration, teamwork, and self-confidence. In Canada, many high schools feature after school improv programs to provide a safe and uplifting environment to make friends and have fun. Recently, the Psychology Lab at Indiana State University designed a special class to teach improv to autistic children. The program successfully used improv to help these students better communicate using social cues such as facial expression, body language, and tone of voice; the result were students better able to understand and express emotion.
For more than a decade, Dad’s Garage has offered a high school outreach program, and the Summer Camp continues this legacy of kick-starting a love for theatre and improv at an early age. Improv builds the skills of confidence, failure resiliency, and teamwork in a positive and uplifting environment
Enrollment begins March 1, and space is limited.
