Voters will be casting their ballots in the District 3 special election tomorrow.
Several candidates are vying for the city council seat vacated after former councilman Ivory Lee Young, Jr. passed away late last year. Young was hospitalized in early October after a fall left him unresponsive and with severe brain damage, Atlanta Loop reported. He had been on leave at the time while seeking treatment for cancer. Young was 56 when he passed away in November.
Nine candidates in total are competing to fill Young’s seat, according to the Northside Neighbor. They are: Erika Estrada, a corporate controller; Byron Amos, a District 2 Atlanta Board of Education member; Ricky Brown, a DJ; Antonio Brown, owner of a high-end footwear company; Mesha Mainor, a licensed physical therapist and Ph.D. candidate; Jabari Simama, who held the seat for six years before Young, Young’s widow, Shalise Young; Greg Clay, Young’s competitor in the 2017 election; and Matthew Charles Cardinale, editor of the Atlanta Progressive News and civic activist.
