Upcoming Beltline community meetings to discuss DeKalb crossing, Southside Trail, Murphy Crossing

Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. will hold several community meetings in the next few weeks to gather input and update the community on its projects, including a discussion on the DeKalb Avenue crossing that has garnered some controversy in recent weeks.
The design of the Southside Trail between Pryor Road SW and University Ave SW will be discussed at the first meeting on Sept. 13.
“We are seeking input on the location of ramps and stairs to access the trail, as well as what type of community spaces you would like to experience along this section of the trail,” according to a post on ABI’s website calendar.
The planning and design process for the Southside Trail could take up to two years, according to a recent article in Curbed Atlanta.
A second community meeting on Sept. 19 will provide updates to the Murphy Crossing Feasibility work.
The Murphy Crossing area, near Murphy Avenue Southwest and Warner Street Southwest, will be a mixed-use development area. The area is also close to the portion of the Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail that is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2017.
ABI is working on mapping out goals for the next five years for the site.
Initially, a third meeting had planned to provide an update on the Atlanta Streetcar project. However, an update sent out on Thursday said ABI will also provide a presentation of the options for crossing DeKalb Avenue Southeast.
This tunnel crossing has become a recent topic of controversy, as reported by Creative Loafing. Some neighborhood groups and folks as influential as BeltLine visionary Ryan Gravel have questioned ABI’s initial plans, saying they created a potential bottleneck on the trail and did not give adequate consideration for public transit.
